Vivo X500 Series: A New Era of Smartphone Photography

September is often a bustling month for major smartphone releases, and this year, the debut of new iPhones is set to be complemented by the arrival of the new vivo X500 series. The manufacturer has unveiled three new smartphone models, with the most advanced, the X500 Pro Max, recently made available for hands-on testing. But what kind of photos can you expect from the X500 line?

Unveiling the Vivo X500 Series

During a recent event in China, the spotlight was primarily on the top-tier vivo X500 Pro Max. This entirely new model bridges the gap between the X300 Ultra and the Pro variant (which is a step down from the X300 Pro in some aspects). The base vivo X500 was also introduced, though it is currently slated for Asian distribution only.

Camera Innovations: The ZEISS Partnership

The X500 Pro series boasts a sophisticated camera system, developed in partnership with ZEISS. The smaller Pro variant features a triple-camera island configuration:

• 64 MP telephoto lens (f/2.52)
• 50 MP main camera (f/1.57) with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor
• 50 MP ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.0)

The Pro Max model takes camera capabilities a step further with an even more advanced 200 MP telephoto lens (f/1.67), while retaining the same high-quality main and ultra-wide-angle sensors. Both devices are packed with useful technologies, including a wide dynamic range (up to 17 EV) with low noise, and numerous practical features integrated into the camera application. You’ll find sample photos later in this article showcasing these capabilities.

Stunning Displays and Robust Design

Both the X500 Pro and Pro Max smartphones come equipped with high-quality LTPO AMOLED displays. The X500 Pro features a 6.36-inch panel, while users of the X500 Pro Max will enjoy a more expansive 6.85-inch screen with 2K resolution. Both models offer a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, ensuring buttery-smooth visuals. The X500 Pro boasts a peak brightness of 4500 nits, and the X500 Pro Max reaches an impressive 4400 nits. Furthermore, their robust construction includes high water and dust resistance standards, rated at IP68 and IP69, offering peace of mind for everyday use.

Power and Performance: MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro

Both the X500 Pro and Pro Max are powered by the latest MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro processor, ensuring top-tier performance for demanding applications and gaming. In China, the X500 Pro is equipped with a substantial 6510 mAh battery, supporting fast wired charging at up to 90 watts. The X500 Pro Max, available in the Asian market, features an even larger 7800 mAh battery. It’s worth noting that battery capacities for European models may vary upon their release.

The Vivo X500 Pro Max: An Unboxing Experience

Upon arrival in Shanghai for testing, I received a substantial package labeled “X500 Pro Max Photographer Kit.” This kit is notably larger than even the OPPO Find X9 Ultra Hasselblad Earth Explorer Kit, indicating a comprehensive photography-focused experience. The contents were truly impressive; beyond the stunning blue-colored smartphone, the box was filled with a plethora of accessories.

Beyond the Phone: The Photographer’s Kit

In addition to a basic protective case, the kit included a second, more robust hard plastic case designed with interchangeable overlays for the camera island. The most intriguing accessory is an aluminum extension that allows for the attachment of teleconverters. The comprehensive kit provides two specialized lenses with focal lengths of 400mm and 200mm, respectively, significantly enhancing the phone’s photographic versatility.

First Impressions: Design and Display

While extended testing is still underway due to the pre-release software, the design and materials of the vivo X500 Pro Max are finalized and utterly phenomenal. The frame and the base of the camera island appear to be crafted from aluminum, complemented by a textured glass back cover. I must admit, this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing smartphones I’ve had the pleasure to test recently.

The display is equally impressive. Its sharpness, color reproduction, and viewing angles are fantastic. Although Shanghai hasn’t been particularly sunny since my arrival, the panel’s brightness is excellent, making photography a very pleasant experience even in broad daylight.

Performance Insights

Thanks to the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro processor, there’s no shortage of performance. However, I will reserve my final judgment on the chipset until the smartphone’s official release. The tested unit runs on Android 17 with the OriginOS 7 overlay. It comes equipped with 1 TB of storage and 12 GB of RAM. While rumors suggested the flagship Pro Max might offer 16 GB of RAM in its top configuration, the final memory configurations will be unveiled after the European launch.

Photography Prowess: Sample Shots Breakdown

When it comes to photography, expectations for the vivo X500 Pro Max are high, and the smartphone certainly delivers. Sample photos demonstrate its capabilities across various focal lengths:

• 15mm: Represents the ultra-wide-angle lens, perfect for sweeping landscapes and architectural shots.
• 24mm and above: Captured by the main camera, suitable for everyday photography, portraits, and street scenes.
• 85mm: Utilizes the telephoto lens, ideal for detailed shots and bringing distant subjects closer.
• 400mm: Achieved with the teleconverter, showcasing extreme zoom capabilities for wildlife or distant subjects.

Pricing and Availability of the Vivo X500 Series

The vivo X500 series has initially launched in China, and its availability will be limited to Asia for a period. However, consumers in other regions need not worry, as the European debut is officially scheduled for October 27th. While specific pricing for European markets is yet to be announced, it is anticipated to be comparable to last year’s X300 series models. Both the X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max variants are confirmed for release in Europe.
