most interesting dramas available on Netflix

There are tons of movies on Netflix in all sorts of genres, including dramas. However, it is not always easy to find the most noteworthy ones there. Below you will find a selection of the most interesting ones that can be found in the platform’s library.

Dramas on Netflix – what to watch?

Dramas on Netflix - what to watch? - 21 grams

Film dramas are a genre that defies all definitions. After all, we can have excellent war dramas, but also films focused on love or betrayal can also be brought under the definition of drama. In dramas, we will not find features characteristic of the genre, as is the case, for example, in action movies or science fiction. This is also the strength of similar films that can affect viewers on many different levels. On our website you will find rankings with the best action movies on Netflix , but also with the best war movies . Below you can check out the best dramas available on Netflix, and you can always check the current list of what to watch on the platform .

21 grams

” 21 grams ” is a film that can even be considered a symbol of drama. It tells the story of three people who are united by a tragedy. And we observe their lives at various stages before and after the tragedy. We look at fragments from the lives of the characters, both joyful and painful, from which an image of humanity is built before our eyes, marked by emotions, growing out of good and bad moments and coping with trauma. The great cast is also noteworthy here – Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro and Naomi Watts .

Cast Away – out of the world

This is one of the most humanistic films mainstream Hollywood has ever produced. Tom Hanks, always reliable, plays a man who, as a result of a plane crash, ends up on a deserted island. Without the great role of Hanks, this film would lose a lot, but even subtracting it from the equation for a moment, “ Cast Away ” is a great drama with an adventure and survival thread that makes us realize that we are part of nature, and that we need another human being to survive.

The Breakfast club

A cult film from the 80s, which shows us one day in the life of teenagers in an American high school. They seem to be geographically and temporally distant characters, yet the subject matter is in many respects close because it is universal. ” The Guilty Club ” is a film about the desires and fears of young people, but it is also a reminder that despite many differences, we are fundamentally very similar. This is something worth reminding yourself from time to time.

Mudbound

Since we took a look at the dramas available on Netflix, it is also worth taking a look at the productions of this genre with the Netflix Original label. The leader of streaming services may not be the king of quality when it comes to its original films, but there are some gems among them. One of them is the excellent ” Mudbound “.

It is a beautifully filmed, moving and at times heart-warming (and nerve-wracking) story about America in the years just after World War II. The story focuses on two families, one facing poverty and the other facing racism. The whole thing is wonderfully directed, played at the highest level – it is a film that stays with the viewer for longer.

Marriage Story

The next drama with the Netflix Original tag to watch out for is Marriage Story . The plot of this film is quite simple – we follow the fate of a marriage that is falling apart before our eyes. The erosion of the relationship is interspersed with scenes from the beginning of the relationship between the two protagonists, when the budding feeling was beautiful, strong and sincere. The contrast of what was with what is shows us how much damage time has done. The strength of this film, however, lies in the performances of the actors. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver gave brilliant performances of their acting skills at the highest level.

Manchester by the Sea

And another film on the list that can be considered a standalone synonym or model of film drama. ” Manchester by the Sea ” is a heavy film as it deals with powerful themes such as the loss of loved ones, grief and bereavement after their loss. It is an extremely sad work, but thanks to the fact that it avoids classic dramatic clichés and screenplay shortcuts, it is memorable and makes a powerful impression. Also because it is a film about loss, but also about new beginnings, i.e. about a tragedy that purifies and allows you to open a new chapter in life. And this, although difficult and painful, is also positive in its own way.

Awakenings

Beautiful and moving, even if a bit maudlin at times. There is a simple wisdom in this film that our soul is the key to everything. It is in it that life and strength are smoldering and it is there that you should look for medicines in the form of love, friendship and family. The message may be a bit old-fashioned, but it’s really universal and up-to-date, regardless of whether we agree with it and in what times we live.

In Awakenings , Robin Williams stars as a doctor who uses an experimental drug to bring comatose people back to full consciousness. Robert De Niro in turn, he plays the first patient who is awakened. A friendship develops between the two men. Bearing in mind the above-mentioned names of actors, I don’t think I need to mention to anyone that this film is masterfully played. However, if you haven’t watched it, get ready not only for a show of acting, but also for a whole lot of emotions. They don’t make movies like this anymore.

All Quiet on the Western Front

This is one of the freshest productions you can watch on Netflix that we recently reviewed . All Quiet in the West is obviously a war movie, and partly dressed in horror, but it also qualifies as a drama for obvious reasons. It is a story of wasted youth, sacrificing the lives of an entire generation in the name of conflicts caused by the generation of their fathers and grandfathers. Of course, this film doesn’t tell us anything new about the war, nor does it show anything we haven’t seen before, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a deeply moving work in itself.

Lost in Translation

Another film on the list that perfectly explores what is most human, i.e. the need to communicate and understand another person. Even if that person is a stranger and both of you are in a foreign country and culture. Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola illustrates this perfectly. Not much happens on the screen, yet so much at the same time.

We look at characters who seemingly have nothing in common in a place where they feel alienated, and yet they find a thread of understanding. As it often happens in the case of the most remembered films, the impression after the screening of “Lost in Translation” would probably be less if not for the phenomenal and perfectly subdued performances of Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray.
