Honor 50 Lite review: a simplified smartphone for undemanding users

While the new Honor 50 Lite has a large screen and fast charging, it lacks powerful hardware, water resistance, high refresh rates and 5G networks. Other models in its class, the 50 Lite, will be difficult to compete with.

Honor recently became independent from Huawei and the company managed to make a good first impression with its Honor 50 smartphone . However, after the release of 50 Lite, it became clear that it was too early to rejoice.

Honor 50 Lite Design and appearance

The word Lite in the name of the new smartphone of the Honor 50 line does not quite correspond to the weight and dimensions.

The weight of the device is 192 grams, and the thickness is 8.5 mm, together with the display of 6.67 inches, this makes the 50 Lite a heavy weight category. However, it is comfortable to hold the phone and it is convenient to use it with one hand. There are three colors to choose from: Deep Blue, Space Silver and Midnight Black.

At the top of the back cover there is a large round module with cameras, downward from which thin vertical stripes stretch. The glossy finish on the back has a lot of prints.

Honor 50 Lite Display and sound

The Honor 50 Lite smartphone will appeal to all lovers of large screens. Here the LCD panel is 6.67 inches, with a resolution of 2376 × 1080 pixels.

The bezels around the display are small, but the front-facing camera takes up a lot of space in the upper left corner. At first it seems that there are two sensors, but in fact the second is a light sensor. If you watch videos with a 21: 9 aspect ratio, this notch will be distracting.

Wide color gamut provides coverage of DCI-P3 space. Although the screen lacks a high refresh rate – here it is only 60 Hz. Many smartphones, even in the budget segment, have 90 or 120 Hz. But the polling rate of the sensor layer reaches 180 Hz, which will delight fans of mobile games.

The 50 Lite is pleasantly pleased with the presence of a 3.5mm headphone jack, but the one built-in speaker is not impressive. The sound is mediocre, the lower frequencies sound especially weak. It is better to plug in headphones for listening to music or podcasts.

Cameras in 50 Lite

The camera module on the back is one of the main design elements of the Honor 50 Lite, and the quality of the lenses is not bad.

There are four cameras: the main 64 megapixel, ultra wide-angle 8 megapixel, as well as a depth sensor and a 2 megapixel macro lens. 64-megapixel sensors have already become the standard for smartphones in the budget and mid-price segment, so Honor has not introduced anything revolutionary here.

But the quality of the shooting is pleasantly surprising. It stays tall even in the dark, and the depth sensor adds volume to images. The optical zoom is lacking, only digital up to 8x is available. The 50 Lite ultra wide angle camera makes it possible to take a group photo or any other interesting picture.

A macro lens is useless, its resolution is only 2 megapixels, and it is easier to shoot at close range with the main lens. The front camera has a resolution of 16 megapixels, there is a mode for improving the appearance.

The smartphone records video in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second. The quality of the footage will be fine as long as you are not moving as there does not seem to be any stabilization here.

Software

The recent relationship between Honor and Huawei is reminiscent of the Magic UI shell on top of the 50 Lite operating system.

The smartphone runs Android 11 OS with Magic UI 4.2, and all new Honor smartphones support Google services. Several apps are preinstalled out of the box, but they don’t get in the way.

Honor 50 Lite review

One of the interesting features of the Honor 50 Lite is its reading mode, which adjusts the color temperature of the display to suit the environment. A useful opportunity for everyone who likes to read before bedtime.

Component performance

There are two versions of Honor 50 Lite on sale: 6 or 8 GB of RAM, while the size of the internal storage in both cases is 128 GB.

There is no microSD card slot, so some of the main memory may not be enough, especially if you often take photos and videos. The processor is the Snapdragon 662, which powers many older budget smartphones like the OPPO A73 and Moto G9 Power. This chipset does not have 5G support.

Honor 50 Lite review Geekbench Mark

Performance is the weak side of Honor’s 50 Lite. In GeekBench 5, the device lost to all competitors, gaining 1276 points in multi-core mode. The Poco X3 NFC scores 1764 points, while the Moto G9 Power scores 1375. In the GFXBench Car Chase graphics test, the Honor phone scores only 6 fps.

Autonomy Honor 50 Lite

If long battery life is more important to you than any other aspect, Honor’s 50 Lite is a great option.

Although the battery capacity is 4300 mAh, which is less than the usual 4500-5000 mAh in the segment. But the battery life is quite long: one charge is enough for 7 hours of games or 16 hours of simple tasks.

With normal use, you won’t have to worry about recharging for two to three days. Charging itself is incredibly fast, too, with the included 66W Honor Supercharge recharging 40% power in just 10 minutes. The complete process will take only half an hour.

Outcome

Despite the name, the Honor 50 Lite turns out to be a large and heavy smartphone. This is still the second model from Honor since the company gained independence, but the gadget has enough problems.

I am pleased with the quality of the main camera, but it was not necessary to add four sensors. The large display will appeal to all movie lovers, although the refresh rate is only 60 Hz. And the main problem is iron, which is inferior in power to even cheaper competitors.

Should I buy Honor 50 Lite

Today, the choice in the budget segment is too large to recommend the Honor 50 Lite for purchase. However, in general, this is a good smartphone.
