Do androids dream of Zeiss optics? Testing the vivo X70 Pro + camera

vivo X70 Pro Zeiss optics

The flagships of vivo X-series traditionally offer a lot of good ideas in the field of mobile photography. The X70 Pro + is no exception. He got gimbal stabilization, optics and a set of filters from Zeiss, as well as unusual modes in the settings. Did the company manage to release a new king of the hill? Let’s check in practice what this smartphone can do.

Logo not for show

Looking at the characteristics of the vivo X70 Pro + cameras, you understand: they approached their creation thoroughly. There are no sensors here for show, like 2-megapixel macromodules. Instead, there is a royal set of optics with different focal lengths and stabilization on all sensors, except for the front one.

As in previous smartphones of the series, cooperation with the renowned manufacturer of optics Zeiss is announced. At the same time, the interaction of the two brands has become stronger over time. In the vivo X60 Pro, which was previously our photo test , one of the portrait filters simulated blur in the style of classic Biotar lenses. The new X70 Pro + has four such modes. Also, Zeiss has launched the production of special lenses that allow more light to pass through. And in the camera menu you can see the icon with the logo of the German brand – it is responsible for activating the “natural color”. Let’s check what happened?

Zeiss optics

High-aperture optics

The main sensor of the smartphone is Samsung GN1 with a resolution of 50 megapixels, an aperture of f / 1.57, stabilization and hybrid focusing PDAF + LAF. There is an option for shooting in full size, but by default, frames are obtained at 12.5 megapixels. It is also worth noting that a separate V1 chip is responsible for processing the received images – vivo’s own development. Its mission is to enhance images, ensure low latency and minimal power consumption while shooting.

During testing, the main camera performed well both outdoors and indoors with artificial light. The combination of the large sensor and f / 1.57 aperture gives a shallow depth of field, which results in natural and very pleasing bokeh when shooting nearby subjects. However, shallow depth of field also has its drawbacks. In some scenarios, the photos appear too blurry.

 vivo X70 Pro

Pictures from the main camera vivo X70 Pro + pleases with a good dynamic range – whitewashed sky and gaps in the shadows are practically absent. Although sometimes AI processing is overly zealous, adding contrast to dark details or taking the temperature into warm colors. The latter is especially noticeable indoors. However, in most scenarios, the color rendition is accurate. In shots with an abundance of snow, there is no unpleasant blue, and beige and reddish buildings do not frighten with torn-eyed shades, which is typical of AI in cameras of inexpensive smartphones.

If you want unusual colors – we use one of the built-in filters to choose from, and by default the palette is correct.

For different plots

The smartphone was equipped with two zoom cameras at once, while both received optical stabilization. The Sony IMX663 module with a resolution of 12 megapixels and an f / 1.6 lens aperture is responsible for 2x optical zoom. Up to 5x optical zoom is achieved via an 8MP OmniVision sensor with f / 3.4 optics. It also allows digital zooming up to 60x.

Another module is ultra wide angle. It has a 48MP Sony sensor with f / 2.2 aperture. Thanks to autofocus, it can be used not only for shooting landscapes, but also for macro. Photos with this camera are pleasing with a moderate amount of optical distortion and good detail in the center of the frame, but sharpness decreases at the edges. An interesting feature: this is where the gimbal stabilization “moved” from the main module.

 vivo X70 Pro

Advanced night mode

In vivo smartphones, a lot of attention has been paid to the night shooting function before. Separate filters for photographing in the dark let you color the scene as you please. To do this, the vivo X70 Pro + has as many as 9 styles, from blue-orange to black and white. There is also an option for shooting the Moon, when the image is greatly zoomed in, and the built-in algorithms “finish drawing” the picture – as a result, instead of a bunch of white pixels, a quite clear image of a celestial object is obtained.

As befits a flagship, vivo X70 Pro + allows you to photograph in night mode at different focal lengths. Pictures with different exposures are stitched into one frame with good dynamic range and high quality. Thanks to optical stabilization, even at a zoom, shooting at night is comfortable, and the result is pleasing in detail.

Not without the problem of intra-chamber processing algorithms. Automation is too zealous, as a result, an unpleasant halo is often observed around buildings in the dark. It was as if the photo had been run through the photo editor several times, over and over again applying HDR processing. Also, certain areas of the night sky may have a different color, which is unacceptable. We hope this will be corrected in the next software updates, but for now it is better to do a few takes in the dark. Just in case.

Good at portraits

The vivo X70 Pro + has a solid array of portrait capabilities. Due to the different focal lengths of the optics, you can photograph people at least in full growth, at least in close-up, without changing the shooting point. There is also a choice of filters and styles that change the mood of the picture. There is bokeh intensity adjustment and advanced beautification options.

The partnership with Zeiss reminds of itself again: you can use not only the filter with the imitation Biotar, but also Sonnar, Planar and Distagon. Portraits with backlit backgrounds are especially effective. Simpler styles will also come in handy – the choice of portrait options is impressive. The front camera with a resolution of 32 megapixels and f / 2.45 optics is responsible for creating high-quality selfies. Here, too, there are advanced retouching and color correction settings. The vivo X70 Pro + copes with shooting people very well.

How does he shoot a video?

The device can record video in maximum 8K resolution at 30 frames per second. Stabilization compensates for shaky hands, and during shooting, you can switch to 2x zoom. It is worth considering that the filmed videos have a large volume, and when playing them on a smartphone, jams are visible when you look at panning. The presence of 8K is a nice option, but it shouldn’t be used as the main one. See example below:

When shooting in 4K, 60 fps is available. In this mode the device copes well with its task: the image is smooth, there is a possibility of zooming 2x, the dynamic range and detailing are in order. However, there is reason for criticism. Despite the powerful stuffing, switching between all sensors in 4K is not available. Although separately, you can record videos in this resolution both with a wide-angle camera and with a zoom.

Super Stabilization is only available at 1080p. In this case, you can select both 30 and 60 frames per second. The detail is predictably reduced, but the picture pleases with the almost complete absence of shaking when walking.

There is an option “Films” in the camera menu – it is available by tapping at the top of the interface. In this mode, the frame is cropped to cinematic proportions with black stripes around the edges, and in addition, you can activate one of the built-in filters. However, shooting with filters is again not supported in 4K – the automatic switches to 1080p. This is how the video with the “Evening Breeze” filter, filmed in a shopping center, looks like:

Space for creativity

For those who like to independently control all processes in the camera settings, there is a “Pro” mode. Here you can activate shooting in RAW, change the white balance, focus area and shutter speed. This function is also available for video recording. In this case, you can make a video with a logarithmic gamut, so that you can then independently paint the video sequence according to your own taste in the editor.

Another nice option, available on previous smartphones of the series, is the display of a visual stabilization prompt on the screen. It looks like a circle with a moving dot. With its help, it is easier to understand how fast to move the gadget while panning and how to move when shooting on the go. It is enough to make sure that during recording the point does not leave the limits of the indicated field – in this case, the video sequence will be smooth.

Among other features, we note the function of shooting documents, the ability to photograph the starry sky, options for slow-motion and interval recording. There is a possibility of photographing panoramas, and both ordinary shooting and “Super Panorama” are available. There is a separate mode for shots in motion, and at different focal lengths. These options allow you to use your smartphone camera in a wide variety of scenes.

Vivo has turned out a photo-flagship, as if specially made for experiments with mobile photography. Here you can find high-quality stabilization, filters for every taste, Zeiss optics, and wide zooming options. The smartphone performs well in most scenarios. Not without criticism: I would like better video quality and improved algorithms for shooting in night mode. These features aside, the vivo X70 Pro + is an impressive camera phone.
