My First Encounter with Console Hockey: Diving into NHL 27

Having never played console hockey before, I approached NHL 27 like a complete novice stepping onto the ice for the first time, unsure of which way to go. After several days with the game, I’m still a long way from being a Wayne Gretzky, but I have to admit that Electronic Arts has quite effectively convinced me that hockey can be just as captivating on screen as watching a live game.

A Newcomer’s Perspective on Virtual Ice

Over the years, I’ve virtually immersed myself in numerous sports across PC and console, including football, basketball, boxing, MMA, racing, skateboarding, baseball, golf, and even cycling. However, on this extensive list of virtual athletic achievements, one of the world’s most popular sports remained unexplored: ice hockey. Often cited as the third-largest sport globally, boasting two billion fans, it was a glaring omission. Thanks to Electronic Arts, I finally had the chance to rectify this oversight with NHL 27, which arrived on my Xbox. It’s worth noting that this latest installment in the hockey series is set to debut on September 11th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

As a long-time fan of nearly every sport, I’ve watched countless hockey games on television. Yet, virtually, this was my first genuine encounter with the ice, skates, and puck. After a few days with NHL 27, am I closer to being a Wayne Gretzky, or just another player in some obscure Canadian league?

My initial hours with NHL 27 felt akin to stepping onto the ice without ever having learned to skate. Theoretically, you understand the basics: skate, pass, shoot, and most importantly, score. However, when several players converge on the ice, the puck changes possession every few seconds, and an opponent launches a counter-attack, it quickly becomes clear that theory and practice are vastly different. Consequently, my early focus was less on achieving spectacular victories and more on simply comprehending the chaos unfolding on the ice. Fortunately, NHL 27 excels at allowing players to quickly grasp the fundamental rhythm. After just a few matches, I spent less time fumbling for the right buttons and more time strategically planning how to advance towards the net, find a teammate for a pass, or capitalize on an opponent’s momentary lapse in attention.

NHL 27: Striving for More Than Just Another Sports Game Simulation

This year, Electronic Arts has heavily emphasized immersion, and it’s clear from the opening minutes that this isn’t mere marketing hype. NHL 27 boasts impressive visuals. The meticulously rendered ice rink, detailed player models, authentic jerseys, vibrant boards, dynamic lighting, and comprehensive match presentation all contribute to a highly convincing sports broadcast experience. Complementing the visuals is outstanding sound design. The subtle glide of skates on ice, the sharp crack of sticks hitting the puck, and the distinct thud of a player colliding with the boards are all incredibly well-produced and enhance the realism. Even if you’re not an avid hockey fan, it’s easy to get drawn into the atmosphere.

The presentation of the matches themselves also plays a significant role. NHL 27 doesn’t simply drop you onto the ice and leave you to figure things out. The game’s overall production, engaging commentary, fluid player animations, and the entire match ambiance make it easy to forget you’re watching digital hockey players. This is where EA Sports truly shines – the game not only simulates the sport but strives to recreate the entire spectacle and emotional experience of a live hockey game. Just like exploring the vast world in Elden Ring, mastering NHL 27 offers its own rewarding journey, blending immersion with strategic depth.

Of course, this doesn’t mean I suddenly became an expert. Quite the opposite. In my initial matches, I often found myself making completely nonsensical plays simply because I didn’t fully grasp the dynamics on the ice. However, with time, I began to appreciate the importance of proper positioning, quick passes, and anticipating opponent movements. This learning phase was perhaps the most engaging for me – NHL 27 gradually transitioned from a chaotic hockey game into a sport whose rules I was actively learning and understanding. The depth of strategy, reminiscent of the intricate narratives in Assassin’s Creed II, truly elevates the gameplay experience.

EA Sports has also incorporated several elements designed to add greater depth to the gameplay. One of the most significant is the Superstar X-Factors system, which further emphasizes the distinct differences between the league’s top stars. This feature ensures that elite players feel more unique on the ice, with their individual abilities having a tangible impact on the flow of the game. For me, this was particularly engaging, as it quickly highlighted that not every hockey player behaves in the same way.

Content scarcity is certainly not an issue. NHL 27 offers classic matches, extensive career modes, and Ultimate Team, where you can build your dream roster. There’s also Be a Pro, an option that lets you take on the role of a single player and guide them through the stages of their career. However, for me, the most enjoyment came from simply playing the game. NHL 27 is dynamic but doesn’t feel overly detached from reality. The puck can deflect unpredictably, players clash along the boards, and situations around the net can change in a split second. At a certain point, I stopped over-analyzing every move and simply began reacting to the unfolding events. It was then that I discovered hockey can be genuinely satisfying, even for someone who had virtually no prior experience.

Crucially, NHL 27 didn’t demand that I pretend to already understand nuanced hockey tactics like forechecking from the outset. Despite my initial lack of knowledge, I steadily improved with each passing hour. The fact that the game managed to captivate someone just learning its fundamentals is a strong testament to its accessibility and engaging design.

Has NHL 27 Converted Me into a Hockey Fan?

After a few days with NHL 27, I’m not quite ready to declare I’ve found my new favorite sport. I still have a lot to learn, and some gameplay elements remain less intuitive for me than in football or basketball. However, Electronic Arts accomplished something significant: instead of intimidating a newcomer with complexity, they allowed me to gradually ease into the world of hockey. The more I played, the more I began to understand my actions and why certain strategies proved more effective than others.

The highest compliment I can give NHL 27, from the perspective of a complete novice, is that after finishing one match, I immediately wanted to play another. The game is spectacular, sounds fantastic, and excels at building the atmosphere of a true sporting event. Am I Wayne Gretzky after a few days? Definitely not. But if NHL 27 has helped me progress from a lower-tier player to someone who at least knows which way to skate, then I consider this debut on the ice quite a success.
