Google Pixel to Introduce ‘Photo Shuffle’ Feature, Familiar to iPhone Users
Google is rolling out a major update for its Pixel smartphones, bringing a dynamic wallpaper feature that will sound very familiar to iPhone users. Soon, owners of Google’s flagship devices will likely have an alternative to Apple’s popular ‘Photo Shuffle’ function.
Google is Developing a New Wallpaper Option for Pixel Phones
For over a week, Google Pixel smartphone users have had access to the latest stable Android 17. However, the tech giant hasn’t abandoned its beta program. In the QPR beta 5 version, AndroidAuthority editors uncovered traces of a forthcoming new feature.
A tool named ‘Photo Shuffle’ was discovered within the application code. This feature will enable users to cyclically change their system background using images from their personal gallery. Users will have the flexibility to select an existing album or create a new, dedicated collection of images, perhaps featuring beloved family members or cherished pets.
Seamless Integration with Google Photos and Customizable Frequency
The source code suggests a direct integration with Google Photos, which already provides intelligent wallpaper suggestions on Pixel phones. This new system will offer precise control over wallpaper refresh frequency. Configuration options found include changing photos hourly, daily, in sync with sunrise and sunset, or even with every screen tap.
This mechanism is identical to Apple’s ‘Photo Shuffle,’ which was introduced to iOS in 2022 with the launch of iOS 16. This provides a familiar and welcome feature for those transitioning or using both ecosystems.
Anticipated Release and Broader Availability
Currently, this feature is in its very early stages of development and cannot be activated in settings. Google is expected to release this solution as part of the stable Android 17 update or in one of the upcoming quarterly Pixel Feature Drops. At present, it’s unclear whether this solution will be available on Android devices from other manufacturers.
